About Paraty

Tucked between the lush green mountains of the Bocaina National Park and the island-studded bay of Angra dos Reis, Paraty (pron. pah-ra-CHI) is one of the most charming little towns in Brazil.

Its Centro Histórico (old town) has been preserved as it was in its 18th century heyday, with cobblestoned, pedestrian-only streets and renovated colonial-style mansions. Many of these have now been converted into restaurants, art galleries, guesthouses and shops, which give the town a unique atmosphere that is at once laid-back, traditional and cosmopolitan.

The colonial architecture is complemented by the stunning natural setting, with unspoilt beaches, forests, waterfalls and islands all within easy reach. All kinds of sports and outdoor activities can be enjoyed, from hiking to sailing to scuba diving.Praia da Ponta Negra, Trindade

Paraty has a busy tourist calendar, hosting several annual events such as its renowned international literary festival. The region produces some of Brazil’s best cachaças or ‘pingas’ and so another of its attractions is the annual Festival da Cachaça. This year’s festival will take place Aug 17-20, partly overlapping with our event.

Hotel & Hostel

As Paraty is so small and easy to walk around, there will be no centralized accommodation for the conference – each participant is free to choose according to her/his taste and pocket.

There are no large hotels in Paraty – instead, accommodation is provided by dozens of small pousadas (guesthouses) and albergues (hostels). All levels of quality and price are well represented. Accommodation in the historic sector (Centro Histórico), where the conference venue (Casa da Cultura) is found, tends to be more expensive. Closer to the bus station, or on the further side of the small river that crosses the town, prices can be considerably lower. Even in these cases, though, a 10-15 min walk will suffice to reach the Casa da Cultura.

Getting to Paraty

Arriving in Brazil
Paraty lies roughly 250km southwest of Rio de Janeiro and 300km northeast of São Paulo, so both cities are convenient points of entry for those arriving by plane.

Most Europeans and Latin Americans do not need visas to enter in Brazil, but US, Canadian and Australian citizens, among others, do. Up-to-date information on your country’s visa status can be found at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

Arriving in Paraty for the School: Conference Bus
For those going to the Quantum Information School, we arranged for special (free) Conference buses. The buses will depart from both Rio and São Paulo on the morning of Sunday, August 13th. Click here to book a seat (closed).

Arriving in Paraty by regular coach
There are frequent, reliable and comfortable coach (bus) lines to Paraty from Rio (Novo Rio bus station), São Paulo (Tietê bus station) and other cities. A one-way ticket from either of these cities costs around R$80-90. You can book a bus ticket here (tickets become available 1 month before the trip date), or directly at the bus station (see links above). It is also possible to arrange for a private shuttle service by contacting Paraty Tours.

Day care center

For this edition, the Quantum Information School and Workshop has found a local partner that has offered to host the children of participants during our event at a cost of R$60,00/day, from 8am to 5pm. This price already includes meals and transportation.

Named Jardim do Beija Flor, our partner is located near Paraty, but not inside the city, in a very bucolic environment where the kids have plenty of space and direct contact with nature.

The logistics regarding this service are to be arranged directly with the director of the kindergarten, Mônica, at movi03[at] who will be responsible for the hosting and transportation of the children. Contact can be made in Portuguese, English or Spanish and, when contacting her, the participant of our event should mention our event as well as the number of kids, their age, the dates and any other detail that could help her with the logistics.
